Chain Width Guide for Men: How to Choose the Right Size

Chain width is the decision most people skip over — they pick a chain they like the look of without thinking about how it'll actually sit on their body. Here is how to get it right.

Why Width Matters More Than Length

Length is adjustable — you can go up or down a couple of inches and get away with it. Width is fixed. A chain that is too thin for your build will disappear. A chain that is too wide will overpower everything. Get the width right first, then worry about length.

Matching Width to Body Type

Wider necks and broader builds carry more width naturally. If you have a wider neck, a 5mm Cuban link will look like a thread. You need at least 8-10mm for it to read as a deliberate choice rather than something you found in the bottom of a drawer.

Slimmer builds often work better with 5-8mm chains — enough to be visible without fighting against a frame that is not built to carry heavy gold. That said, there are no hard rules. If you want to wear a 12mm chain on a slim build, own it.

Width by Chain Type

Different chain styles read differently at the same width:

  • Cuban link at 8mm — substantial but wearable daily. The interlocking links mean 8mm of Cuban reads heavier than 8mm of a finer chain.
  • Tennis chain at 4mm — the sweet spot. Enough stones to get proper light return without the chain dominating. Goes to 5mm if you want more presence.
  • Box or rope chains at 5-6mm — everyday weight, easy to layer, visible enough to be worth wearing.

Width for Layering

When layering chains, you want contrast in width as much as contrast in length. A 10mm Cuban link at 22 inches with a 4mm tennis chain at 18 inches gives you two distinct profiles. Stack two 8mm chains and they merge into one vague mass.

The simplest rule: no two chains at the same width in a stack.

Width for Different Occasions

Thinner chains — 5-8mm — are the ones you wear constantly. They work under a collar, over a t-shirt, in any context. Wider chains — 10mm and above — are for when the chain is supposed to be noticed. Wear them where that is appropriate for you.

There is no wrong answer here. Wear what you feel right in. But know what you are buying before you buy it.

Where to Start

If you are buying your first proper chain, 8-10mm Cuban link at 20-22 inches covers the most ground. It is wide enough to be worth wearing, not so wide that it is context-specific. From there, you can add a thinner piece to layer above it.
